- What does the $9 cover?
- Suru's $9 base rate covers platform design, build and maintenance incl. your masthead, drafting, publishing, hosting, storage — and a fair-use allowance of 10 stories a month with up to 10 AI drafts on each. Publisher Free accounts get 1 story a month with 3 AI drafts, 3 integrity checks and 30 minutes of transcription. Your usage is always shown in your dashboard, and stories and drafts become unlimited in any month where our 6.5% share of your reader revenue clears $9.
- How do reader payments work?
- Reader payments are a free add-on to Publisher Max — switch them on and set one price for your publication, minimum $5 a month. Readers pay you directly through Stripe, and your name — not ours — is what shows on their bank statement. Stripe takes its processing fee (standard 2.9% + 30¢), then Suru takes 6.5% of what's left. On a $10 reader you receive $8.80.
- So how much of a reader payment do I actually keep?
- It depends on the price you set, because Stripe's fee includes a fixed 30¢. On a $5 subscription you receive $4.25 (85% of what the reader paid); at $10 it's $8.80 (88%); at $25 it's $22.41 (90%). Suru's own share is 6.5% of the post-Stripe amount in every case.
- Do I pay $9 as well as the 6.5%?
- At first, yes — and that's the whole of it. The $9 covers the platform, and we take 6.5% of what readers pay you after Stripe's fee. In any month where our 6.5% share clears $9 — about $139 of reader revenue after Stripe's fee — the $9 isn't charged at all. If a later month drops below that level, the $9 comes back for that month. No true-ups, no surprise month-end charges.
- Does my allowance ever grow?
- Yes. Turn on reader payments and, once our 6.5% share of your reader revenue passes $9 in a month, your stories and drafts go unlimited for that month — your readers are already covering the platform.
- I'm on Lite. What happens to me?
- Nothing changes — you keep the $3 price for as long as you stay subscribed. Lite is closed to new signups, and reader payments are Publisher Max only, so you'd need to move up to get paid.
- Can I switch from Publisher Free to paid later?
- Yes — anytime. Your stories, drafts and publication name come with you.
- Why this pricing model?
- Suru should be as low cost as possible, or free when you're just using it lightly.
