Reader payments

What you actually keep.

Reader payments are a free add-on to Publisher Max. Paying subscribers pay you through Stripe, with your name on their statement. Stripe charges its own processing fee — that money is Stripe's, not ours — and Suru takes 6.5% of what's left. Here's what that means in real money.

Twelve hypothetical months at $7.00 / month. Growth, a churn month, then steady acceleration.

Stripe fees are 2.9% + 30¢ per charge. Suru takes 6.5% of net. The $9 Publisher Max base is waived in any month where Suru's 6.5% share clears $9 (about $139.00 / month net) — and it is charged in months that fall short, as April shows above.

Stripe's standard fee is 2.9% + 30¢ per payment and can vary by country and card type. The fixed 30¢ is why the percentage you keep is lower on cheaper subscriptions. Suru's share is always 6.5% of the amount after Stripe's fee. Rows marked "Waived" are earning enough that the $9 Publisher Max base fee drops away — that happens in any month where our 6.5% share clears $9 (about $139 a month of reader revenue after Stripe's fee). In months that fall below that level, the $9 is charged. Once Suru's 6.5% share passes $9 in a month, your stories and drafts also go unlimited for that month.

How we compare

The cheapest serious option for indie newsrooms.

Suru vs Substack — run your own numbers

You keep $27.77 more a month on Suru — $333.23 a year.

100 paying subscribers at $7.00 / month — $700.00 gross.
PlatformStripe feesPlatform takeBase feeYou net / monthYou net / year
Suru (Publisher Max)$50.30$42.23 (6.5% of net)Waived$607.47$7,289.63
Substack$50.30$70.00 (10% of gross)$0.00$579.70$6,956.40

Both rows assume Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢ per charge. Substack takes 10% of gross; Suru takes 6.5% after Stripe's fee, plus the $9 Publisher Max base — which is waived in any month our share clears $9. Below roughly 30 paying subscribers Substack's $0 base wins; above that, Suru's smaller cut pulls ahead and keeps widening.

Comparison figures assume Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢ fee on both platforms, so the numbers are on the same basis. Suru is the only one with on-the-ground audio capture, AI drafting, and a journalism quality check built in.

FAQ

What does the $9 cover?
Suru's $9 base rate covers platform design, build and maintenance incl. your masthead, drafting, publishing, hosting, storage — and a fair-use allowance of 10 stories a month with up to 10 AI drafts on each. Publisher Free accounts get 1 story a month with 3 AI drafts, 3 integrity checks and 30 minutes of transcription. Your usage is always shown in your dashboard, and stories and drafts become unlimited in any month where our 6.5% share of your reader revenue clears $9.
How do reader payments work?
Reader payments are a free add-on to Publisher Max — switch them on and set one price for your publication, minimum $5 a month. Readers pay you directly through Stripe, and your name — not ours — is what shows on their bank statement. Stripe takes its processing fee (standard 2.9% + 30¢), then Suru takes 6.5% of what's left. On a $10 reader you receive $8.80.
So how much of a reader payment do I actually keep?
It depends on the price you set, because Stripe's fee includes a fixed 30¢. On a $5 subscription you receive $4.25 (85% of what the reader paid); at $10 it's $8.80 (88%); at $25 it's $22.41 (90%). Suru's own share is 6.5% of the post-Stripe amount in every case.
Do I pay $9 as well as the 6.5%?
At first, yes — and that's the whole of it. The $9 covers the platform, and we take 6.5% of what readers pay you after Stripe's fee. In any month where our 6.5% share clears $9 — about $139 of reader revenue after Stripe's fee — the $9 isn't charged at all. If a later month drops below that level, the $9 comes back for that month. No true-ups, no surprise month-end charges.
Does my allowance ever grow?
Yes. Turn on reader payments and, once our 6.5% share of your reader revenue passes $9 in a month, your stories and drafts go unlimited for that month — your readers are already covering the platform.
I'm on Lite. What happens to me?
Nothing changes — you keep the $3 price for as long as you stay subscribed. Lite is closed to new signups, and reader payments are Publisher Max only, so you'd need to move up to get paid.
Can I switch from Publisher Free to paid later?
Yes — anytime. Your stories, drafts and publication name come with you.
Why this pricing model?
Suru should be as low cost as possible, or free when you're just using it lightly.
